Nadiya Qudsi Book a call

For young adults

Why do I feel so lonely after moving abroad?

Moving to a new country is exciting on paper. In real life it often comes with a quiet loneliness that people back home don't see. If you feel low after a move, it doesn't mean you made the wrong choice. It means you lost a lot at once.

What you might be missing

Not just people, but small things: a friend you could call without planning, food that tastes like home, being understood without explaining yourself, knowing how everything works. When all of that goes at once, even a good job and a nice flat can feel empty.

Why it can feel worse over time

The first few weeks are busy and new. The harder part often comes a few months in, when the routine settles and you notice you still don't have close friends. Long work hours make it harder, and so does the pressure to look happy on calls home.

Homesickness is grief for an old life, not a sign you're ungrateful.

Small things that help

When to talk to someone

If the low mood lasts more than a few weeks, or you start pulling away from everyone, it's worth talking it through. Having moved from India myself, I know how heavy this can be.
